They are a great mobile option as they are small and can be placed either in the parents’ bedroom or in the nursery. The key difference between a bassinet and a cot is the size. A bassinet is suitable for a newborn until they reach around six months of age, or when they start to roll or sit. A cot, however, has enough space to be suitable for children up to three years of age.

A cot also features a railing around the bedding, which is in place for your child’s safety. As your child grows, they will begin to roll around their bed more frequently and start to stand up. The protective railing of a cot keeps them from falling out of their bed at night. Another difference is that bassinets are designed with lower sides, making it easier for you to frequently check on your child whilst they have a shorter sleep cycle.

Your baby can be transitioned from a bassinet into a cot as early as you like. Some parents even chose not to use a bassinet and have a cot from the get-go. However, you should move your baby out of their bassinet once they reach six-month-old, or once they begin to roll and sit.
